Immediately after the accident, Sehwag took to Twitter to praise those who participated in the rescue operations. Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah Super Fast and goods train collided, killing around 300 people. Up to 1000 people were injured. All I can do is protect the future of their children who lost their lives in this tragic accident. Virender Sehwag has come forward to provide free education to those children at Sehwag International School Boarding Facility. Virender Sehwag tweeted to this effect. At the same time, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court seeking the appointment of an expert commission to investigate the train accident in Odisha. The petition sought to appoint an expert commission headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court. Advocate Vishal Tiwari filed a PIL in the Supreme Court.

Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena explained the death toll in the train accident. 288 people have died in this accident so far. However, Pradeep Jena stated that the death toll was estimated at 275. He said that the number of dead has come to 288 as some dead bodies were counted twice at the scene and in the hospital. But, now, after a detailed inspection and report by the District Collector, Jena said, 275 people died in the accident.
78 dead bodies out of 275 have been identified and handed over to their families. Jena said that the process of identifying 10 more bodies has been completed. So far 170 dead bodies have been shifted from Balasore to Bhubaneswar. Another 17 people will be shifted here. Now the challenge for the authorities is to identify the dead bodies accurately.. DNA samples will be examined to identify the people. Jena said that the photographs of the deceased will be uploaded on three websites www.osdma.org, www.srcodisha.nic.in and www.bmc.gov.in.
On the other hand, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced financial assistance to the families of the deceased. It has been decided to provide financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of those who died in the accident. An assistance of Rs.1 lakh will also be given to those seriously injured in the accident. Financial assistance will be provided from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
The central government has announced a financial assistance of 10 lakhs to the families of the deceased. Also, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had earlier announced that compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be given to those seriously injured and Rs 50,000 to those slightly injured. With this, the Odisha government has also announced financial assistance.
