Makar Sankranti festival falls almost in the month of January. Every year the Sun moves through 12 consecutive signs. It is in this sequence that we celebrate the day when the Sun enters Capricorn as Makara Sankranti. Also, Shastras also say that on this day, Lord Bhagiratha brought Ganga to the earth and released the curse of the oceans. On Makar Sankranti, there is also a tradition of bathing in holy places and donating sesame seeds, jaggery, sugarcane, groundnut, sesame laddu, rice, vegetables and pulses.
