The debate on the proposal for redistribution of Lok Sabha constituencies is heating up. Leaders and analysts from southern states are commenting strongly against this proposal. Recently, Kamal Haasan, the founder of Makkal Needi Maiyam, spoke about it. He opined that if the Lok Sabha constituencies are redistributed on the basis of population, there is a possibility of severe injustice to the southern states. It was wrong to punish the southern states for practicing population control. There is a need for the southern states to discuss together how to move the country forward. Kamal Haasan made these key remarks at the India Today Conclave South 2023. He commented that India first.. South India is the key goal.

Kamal said that he is worried about the calculations of how many seats the southern states will get if the Lok Sabha constituencies are redistributed on the basis of population. He commented how punishing those who controlled the population would be the right decision. Kamal made these comments in response to the ongoing campaign to increase the number of seats in Parliament.

He said that the total population of the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh is more than the population of the southern states. He said that if the Lok Sabha seats are increased on the basis of population, the representation of southern states in the parliament will decrease. As a person from South India, this is worrying him. Kamal Haasan commented that he has paid taxes.

Southern states should fight together..

Telangana Minister KTR has recently clarified that he is against the proposal to redistribute Lok Sabha constituencies on the basis of population. He said that southern states which have controlled the population with progressive policies are likely to suffer severe injustice. He said that all the southern states need to unite to face this injustice. He said that it is necessary for everyone to raise their voice on this apart from politics. And Majlis Party Chief Asaduddin Owaisi has also made it clear that he is against this proposal. Tamil Nadu CM Stalin also raised his voice of protest.

Why the objections to the redistribution of Lok Sabha constituencies?

It seems that there is a possibility of redistribution of Lok Sabha constituencies in 2026. If that happens, the current 545 seats in the Lok Sabha may become 848 seats. But the leaders and some analysts say that this is unfair to the southern states. According to the population, there will be a huge increase in the number of Lok Sabha seats in the northern states, while in the southern states like AP, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala, our voice will be reduced at the national level, and the northern states will increase, and some people are expressing fear that there is a hidden BJP conspiracy in this. Others say that if South India’s voice is weakened, we will have no choice and no noise in politics and central schemes.

Now the seats in the Lok Sabha are 545. After the redistribution they are said to increase to 848. It is said that only UP and Bihar will get 222 MP seats, while the other North-West, West, East and North-East states will get 461 seats. It is said that all the southern states will have to settle with 165 seats. According to the current seats, the share of the South in the Lok Sabha will be around 24 percent. After delimitation, it is likely to fall to 19.5 percent. It is said that due to this, the base of South Voice will decrease at the level of Delhi, and if the numbers decrease, the southern states will not be able to fight hard and get what they want.

Will Southern states be treated unfairly?

Arguments are heard that the states of AP, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala will be beaten in terms of the funds and schemes allocated by the Centre. But the analysts are dismissing these claims. Analysts are of the opinion that there is nothing to be afraid of. In order to do delimitation, constitutional amendment should be done and it cannot be done without the permission of southern states. But some analysts say that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a signal through his first speech in the new parliament that the seats will increase in the north. If the delimitation is done only on the basis of population, it will be unfair to the South. It seems likely that the discussion on the de-limitation proposal will continue to rage and turn into a ruckus.
