But the Punjab team, who batted first, made 143 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs. By the time the Punjab innings was completed, Shikhar Dhawan, the captain of that team, scored 99 runs and remained unbeaten.
As a result, Dhawan has joined a rare list. Dhawan has got a place in the list of IPL players who remained not out at 99 runs. But there are only three players in this list before him. Now let’s see who they are.
Suresh Raina, popularly known as ‘Mr IPL’, became the first player in the history of the tournament to remain unbeaten on 99 runs. Yes, he scored an unbeaten 99 against the home team in the 2013 IPL season at Hyderabad. Batting first, CSK scored 223/3 in 20 overs. Also won the match by 77 runs.
In IPL 2019, Punjab Kings’ Chris Gayle remained unbeaten on a personal score of 99 runs against his former IPL team Royal Challengers Bangalore. Chris Gayle scored an unbeaten 99 off 64 balls in this match at Mohali. But in that match, Punjab Kings team lost to Bengaluru by 8 wickets. With this, Universal Boss became the second player to remain not out at 99 runs.
Two years after Chris Gayle’s innings of 99 (not out), another player from the same Punjab Kings also missed a century by one run. Mayank Agarwal, then playing for Punjab, scored an unbeaten 99 off 58 balls against Delhi Capitals. But in this match too, Punjab lost by 7 wickets.
Recently the same happened to Shikhar Dhawan in IPL 2023, Season 16. He scored an unbeaten 99 off 66 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Thus, Gabbar became the fourth player to remain unbeaten at 99 runs in the IPL records.
