A train accident in Odisha turned tragic. 288 people died and more than 1000 were injured in the Coromandel Express train accident. At present, the injured are receiving treatment in hospitals. The accident which happened on Friday intensified rescue operations till yesterday. Dead bodies were piled up at the accident site. Along with the NDRF teams, other support teams also worked hard and took out the dead bodies. But this accident is one of the 5 railway accidents in India so far. Track rehabilitation works are going on fast. An investigation into how the accident happened is ongoing. The Railway Department has released a preliminary report stating that the accident occurred due to a signal problem. Minutes before the accident, the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express took a loop line instead of the main railway line, the railway department said in a report.
Coromandel hit at a speed of 127 kmph:
First the Coromandel Express was signaled to go on the main railway line. Then it was taken back. It seems that the train went into a loop line. A goods train with an iron ore load was already stopped in that loop line. At the same time, the Coromandel Express derailed due to a collision at a speed of 127 kmph. Due to this, some bogies went on the adjacent main line. At the same time, Yashwantnagar Express, coming at a speed of 124 kilometers per hour, will pass over another major railway line. A fatal accident occurred when the bogies of the Coromandel Express derailed and ran into this train.
What is loopline..? Why arrange it..?
Many people may not know what a loopline is. Railways lays some other tracks connecting the main railway lines near the railway station. These lines help to keep more trains at the station. Moreover, these loop lines play a vital role in giving way to other trains. This loop line is connected to the main line again after traveling some distance.
What is the length of the loopline?
These loop lines are about 750 meters long and play a vital role in giving way to other trains. It is possible to stop the entire train along with two engines on these. At present, the Railways is taking steps to establish a 1500 meter long loop line. This means that this loop is set to double in length.
